VTOL or vertical takeoff and landing, is different from a regular airplane since it does not need to use an airport to be able to fly. A VTOL plane can take you exactly to your point of destination from your point of origin because of its vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. This is different from a local flight where you have to go to an airport, then the plane will fly you to another airport, then you take a car to your real destination. With VTOL you don’t have to travel that long going to and from the airport. VTOL takes you to where you want to go.
VTOL has application in other areas other than in travel. VTOL is also useful in rescue operations and in military and law enforcement applications. In these applications, we see clearly the importance of taking off and landing at particular locations rather than an airport.
When VTOL is constructed, the work is not as easy as constructing a conventional winged plane. It is more difficult technically. It has many more benefits. Here are the advantages of VTOL.
VTOL does not require an airport as most regular plane does, but there are more places that it can take off and land which does not need an airstrip. Much time and fuel from going to and from the airport is saved with VTOL. If we measure that average distance anyone has to travel to reach the nearest airport, we get 17 miles. But it will only take less than a mile to reach an area where a VTOL can land and takeoff. You don’t have to travel 17 miles if you take a VTOL plane.
You get a faster and more efficient plane in a VTOL. This is because regular aircrafts use their wings for takeoff and landing. If the aircraft has large wings, drag is produced. And drag increases with speed. More drag is caused by friction on the wings. The airplane then flies slower but it is burning more fuel. VTOL wings, on the other hand, are not used for takeoff and landing. Speed and efficiency is the result of their wing design. So, VTOL components do not cause drag which allows for a faster and more efficient plane.
During takeoff and landing, the plane is at high risk of accidents. Takeoff and landing are the most dangerous parts of a flight. The safest point in a plane ride is when the plane is cruising at high altitudes. There is more danger when the plane is close or rolling on the ground at high speeds because there is very little margin for error. This is why takeoff and landings are very dangerous despite having vast space in airfields. This does not happen with VTOL planes because of their vertical takeoff and landing. The risk is reduced since a VTOL plane accelerates and decelerates in the air.
